A native of Northumberland, Gibson obtained employment in Flintshire in1863 as a clerk for Wrexham, Mold and Connah's Quay Railway. By the late 1860s he had risen to become manager and secretary of the Buckley Brick and Tile Company, and remained in charge until shortly before his death in 1927. He was a major in the 1st Flintshire (Buckley) Engineers Volunteers and a leading figure in the social and political life of Buckley.
