Major Gibson's retirement from command"

Officers of the 1st Flintshire "Buckley" Royal Engineer Volunteers with members of the Gibson family on the occasion of Major John Merriman Gibson's retirement from command, April 20th 1898. This photo was taken on or near the day he retired.

He was presented with a silver bowl and an illuminated address bearing the names of past and present members (about 200 of them) to commemorate his 28 years service.

The three younger ladies, Lil (Elizabeth), Sis (Isabella) and Nell (Ellen) were Major and Mrs Ellen Gibson's daughters. Mrs Gibson's maiden name was Brayne. Lil and Sis never married; Nell married Tom Edwards.
