AN INDUSTRIAL AND POTTERY WALK ROUND BUCKLEY - NUMBERS 28 AND 29

28. Turning back towards Buckley towards Alltami Road, one sees more hummocks on the right hand side of the common. They are the remains of John Lewis Junior's Pottery. Continuing southwards towards Buckley, a small cottage and enclosure which extends on the left, towards the "Trap" Pool, is the site of Whitely's Pottery. The far end of the enclosure is pocked with hummocks. Here was probably the potter's shed, which was used as a dissenters' meeting place in the 18th century.

29. On the right hand side of the road is a footpath passing Cheshire's Cottage and entering the precincts of the Elfed High School. This large school is named after a celebrated Welsh preacher, Elfet Lewis. He started his first ministry at the age of 19 in the nearby Saint John's United Reformed Church (then the Congregational Church).

Near the entrance to the school building is a large natural stone bearing inscribed lines. The stone was found by accident near an ancient bell-pit coal working in Dinghouse Wood. The National Coal Board kindly transferred it to the school when they began open-cast excavations in 1960. The stone may have been used for sharpening pick-axe blades.
