AN INDUSTRIAL AND POTTERY WALK ROUND BUCKLEY - NUMBERS 22 AND 23
22. Travel along the main road towards Mold for a few hundred yards to the Elm Crossroads. Turn right and proceed for a few hundred yards towards Northop Hall. At the junction of the track to Tirlas Coch Farm is a small shed. Drainage trenches in 1976 revealed post-medieval pottery wasters. Further along was, until 1970, a three-chimneyed brickworks manufacturing common bricks and known as the "New Castle Works" or Elm Brickworks. Each towering chimney bore the name "Castle" down the upper length of its stack.
23. A few hundred yards further along Pinfold Lane towards Northop Hall was the site until the mid 1970s of the Castle Brickworks.
It was established in the mid 19th century by a Mr Alletson and a group of Irish partners for the manufacture of refractory ware. Later it was bought by Messrs John Summers to ensure a constant source of kiln lining furniture in their steel works. This works became the figure-head name for most of the Buckley brickworks taken over by Summers.
