see 7.239 for Eric Hayes' memoir, "About me in a Nutshell", which describes his experiences as a prisoner of war in Poland.

Official letter from the War Organisation of the British Red Cross and Order of St, John of Jerusalem to Mrs J. Hayes, 84, Chester Road, Buckley, Chester

Bdr J.E. Hayes

Dear Madam

Having heard from you that the above is a prisoner of war in enemy territory in the camp known as Stalag XXA we are sending you a circular (PW/41/40) which will tell you how to write to him and what is being done by this Department with regard to sending food and clothing.

Do not be unduly anxious if you do not hear from the prisoner for some time, as this may be due to the delay in the post. You cannot write to the prisoner until you know his camp address; if it is not stated above, please inform us as soon as you receive it.

Yours faithfully

Edith Smith

Deputy General Secretary
