AN INDUSTRIAL AND POTTERY WALK ROUND BUCKLEY - NUMBER 3
150 yards west of the pottery is occupied by the premises of the Buckley Foundry Company Ltd.
Near this point, the tramway turned northerly to enter Lane End Brickworks.
Until the 1960s a noted Buckley landmark, the Buckley Smelt, was situated here.
This was a unique coniclal brick structure. It was 40' internal diameter at the base. Approximately 60' high, and with an opening at the top about 15' diameter. The top circle of brick was capped with a heavy cast iron segmented plates.
It is said to have been built about 1790 by John Wilkinson of Bersham. Famous as an iron master, he owned ironworks, collieries and leadmines in various parts of Britain. He had coal mines at Alltami and leadmines at Llyn y Pandy, locally. Its situation at Buckley would have taken advantage of cheap fuel as well as possibly economical transport down to the River Dee.
