28 November 1939
see 7.239 for Eric Hayes' memoir, "About me in a Nutshell", which describes his experiences as a prisoner of war in Poland.
This telegram, handed in at Aldershot at 10.25am and consisting of 14 words, was to advise the family of my return from embarkation leave and my departure for France.
"Arrived safely yesterday. Going off today. Writing later. Love Eric."
This was my first arrival abroad. I was sent up for my T.A.B. jabs and then told to catch the train, but I was given some embarkation leave first - about a week.
