AN INDUSTRIAL AND POTTERY WALK ROUND BUCKLEY - NUMBER 4
Proceed eastwards down Brunswick Road, then Chester Road, until the road junction to Penymynydd is reached. Opposite the council flats, turn left up a narrow lane known as Army Lane.
The premises at its entrance is the Salvation Army barracks, hence its name.
Climbing gently, one sees Lane End Brickworks of Messrs Butterley Building Materials on the left. The deep open clay hole was once the site of Knowl Hill. It was once the highest point in Buckley before excavations dug it away. This quarry runs alongside the Buckley fireclay fault. Its up-thrust brought fireclays up to workable levels. Nearby, a tramway tunnel proceeded under a spur of the hill and emerged at the foot of the hill. The entrance is now covered with debris. The tunnel was slightly curved and had three shallow ventilation shafts.
