SHIPS ON THE DEE

A Buckley man was a keen canoeist here at Summers' jetty. His main delight after a summer's day's work was to explore the creeks and inlets of the estuary, often with his son. I used to canoe alongside the moored ships and clout them as I went past. They never hit back! Here at Summers' jetty, cargo boats unload raw materials for the steelworks.

The River Dee was canalised in 1737, thus opening up the way for opportunities for industrial expansion of the whole area, including Buckley.
