No expensive, sophisticated toys or gifts met the happy and expectant gaze of children early last century. Hand-made railway engines , tin trumpets, Buckley clay dolls, apples, nuts and oranges were rapturously accepted. To prove Father Christmas had been - the empty wine glass and remaining crumbs of a mince pie.
