THE TICK TACKER
During the dark evenings, many adventurous exploits were planned by lads. A favourite pastime was to creep up to a house, pin a cotton thread to the upper part of a window so that a button, fastened just below the pin, could tap the window.
Softly creeping to a surrounding hedge, the boy hid behind the hedge and tugged on the thread attached to the button, which then rapped loudly against the window. The cottagers heard the continuous tapping, but searching outside often failed to locate the cause. But these occupants had obviously had previous experience! Here they are, having quietly opened the back door, creeping up on the culprits with a stick.
