SLIDING DOWN KNOWL HILL
Children used bits of timber and flattened cardboard boxes as a seat, controlled by their legs, on which to slide down the slopes on Knowl Hill. They used to come into my shop to ask for boxes for use for removals to a different house and then leave them scattered about the site when they had finished with them as slides. I received complaints about the litter and so I had to stop giving them out. In the 1960s the quarry had extended as far as this popular hill, the area was left derelict and a favourite play place had disappeared.
