THE NIGHT BURNERS AT ALLETSON'S CASTLE BRICK WORKS
CAPTION ONE
Two men only are now necessary to supervise the kilns during the night. They regulate the oil burners and clear the floor of brick stocks for the day-men. A burner periodically gazes at the white hot bricks inside the kiln, through the tinted glass in order to judge when they are ready for cooling. Alletson owned one of the Brickworks before it was taken over by Castle Fire Brick Company.
CAPTION TWO
At the close of a normal day's work, kilns have still to be maintained with regular skilful firing. All through the night, the two burners would systematically attend to each fire grate burning in the works. Slackness would result in fused, vitrified bricks or collapsed kilns.
