River Dee, Connah's Quay

WEPRE GUTTER

A culvert drains the common at Buckley Mountain, proceeds through Alltami and past Ewloe Castle to enter the River Dee as a trickle of water between Shotton and Connah's Quay. When the flood tide comes up the River Dee, the gutter fills up into a navigable stream which meanders through the salt marsh, under the railway bridge, round the gas works, and then under the main coast road to a point opposite the municipal baths. In this secluded creek, one meets a medly of rare bird and animal life living in a sordid, slimy environment of decayed industrial rubbish.
