CHAOS AT THE CROSS
One hundred years ago, Buckley Cross was, as now, a centre of chaos. Very few buildings existed there, but obstructing the road was a toll-gate. Part of the premises was a small, general shop.
Geese, pigs and other animals were driven along the road to the common, whilst donkey carts and horse waggons conveying merchansise, including bricks, were halted - the drivers often fuming and grumbling to the keeper at the imposition of the toll levvied by the Turnpike Trust for the upkeep of the road.
The toll house occupied the site of the present premises of Messrs Jenkinsons, Outfitters now called The Gatehouse. (Clwyd Aerials in 2002)
