KITE FLYING

At the turn of the century, all the family participated in communal games and competitions. The favourite weekend afternoon pastime was kite flying. Wagers on the length of flight were a feature. The gorse-covered slopes of Knowl Hill were a notable point.

Sometimes the pastime was incorporated with a little cuddling behind the gorse bush - and who could blame the dog for playing gooseberry - as well as tangling the line.
