PELTING THE HORSE-TRAM CARTERS

A tramway tunnel penetrated a spur under Knowl Hill and was pierced by three ventilation shafts.Mischievous lads often pelted the unprotected, helpless carters with soil as they passed these exposed openings about ten feet below. Often a hidden employee guarded them and chased away the culprits. Some youthful offenders of this pre-war practice still bear scars of the beating when they were caught (I was told this tale in the 1950's).
