FIRST LOVE
"When the service was o'er at the front they would meet." (from "MASHIN DAYS", a poem)
Depicts the end of a chapel service on a Sunday evening many years ago and a young man inviting his girlfriend to a stroll. The bold young man on the left is more brazen in his approach. These Sunday evening promenades were often over an established supervised route. The scene depicts the Congregational Church on Buckley Mountain, now demolished 2002. The Church became the Saint John's United Reformed Church.
VERSION TWO
A common pre-war custom was for groups to meet after the divine service in summer and follow a popular walk. Parents would walk sedately in front whilst in the rear, lads and wenches would "lassakin" around. As the service ends, a young man approaches an expectant young lady.
