The fettler corrected faults on the finished pot, such as even application of pattern or design, or a mis-shape.
CAPTION ONE
FETTLER'S WEDDING
The fettler got married and introduced his new wife. His mates at the pottery produced the predictable saucy pair of pots, contrived without his knowledge, and giving him and his wife embarrassment and amusement.
CAPTION TWO
"IF IT COULD BE MADE IN CLAY"
"If it could be made in clay, a Buckley potter would make it!" was the proud boast of the craftsman. A favourite request for a jovial wedding gift was the spiked chamber-pot bearing a leering face on its bottom surface and an apt massage round the rim: "Treat me well and keep me clean and I won't tell what I have seen!" The bashful newly-weds received such a gift from their workmates.
