HANGING THE HANGMAN - A LURID BUCKLEY LEGEND

This is a traditional story which is said to be true.

The hangman proceeded from Chester Assizes to Ruthin Assizes via Buckley Mountain. He arrived at Buckley Mountian during the evening and stayed at the Duke of York Tavern.

On his last(!) visit, he accidentally revealed his profession. The villagers persuaded him to demonstrate his technique. This he did by standing on the table, fastening the end of his rope to a beam, and placing the loop round his own neck.

A local wag tipped up the table. The hangman hanged himself!

This is only a tale I was told, with no foundation.
