Morning Ritual

Brook Street was a row of cottages with toilets in the yard at the rear. Every morning, this ritual began! This painting depicts the scene about 1950. There were several Rows in Buckley where "the ritual" took place, for example Twenty Row in Drury.

Notice the young rogue on the toilet roof. He is throwing cinders at the unfortunate users in order to splash the contents around! If caught by the victims, he would be chastised with great vigour!
