TRIBUTE TO GLYN SMITH

Buckley-born, Glyn joined the cornet section of the Royal Buckley Town Band as an enthusiastic twelve year old in 1947. He continued playing his cornet and undertook three years National Service with the Band of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, serving in Malaya and numerous other countries.

On leaving the army, Glyn returned to Buckley and was appointed Principal Cornet playing a range of virtuoso cornet solos and leading the Band on concerts and contests for many years. Later, he combined these duties with that of Deputy Bandmaster, in which capacity he served twelve years before becoming Bandmaster in 1973.

His time as Deputy Bandmaster gave him the opportunity to train youngsters, some of whom have matured with the Band whilst others have sought exciting challenges with some of the best bands in the country, Black Dyke Mills, Foden Motor Works, Fairey Engineering and Point of Ayr, to name but a few.

As Bandmaster he brought a high standard of leadership and musicianship which was acknowledged beyond Buckley and as far away as Czechoslovakia where he was a first class ambassador for the town of Buckley.

Under his baton, the Band gained success in many competitions and Glyn can claim not only to have won but on occasion to have beaten professional conductors.

His enthusiasm, great sense of humour and dedication over 46 years are a part of Buckley history, the like of which may not be seen for many a year. And he still goes on! Donning a new red jacket Glyn will be returning to help the young players of the cornet section. Long may he enjoy his "banding"!
