CAPTION ONE

 

Gibson's (Brookhill) Brickworks

 

started 6/9/1864 when George Meakin and George Powell

obtained lease from Gwysaney Estate.

John Merriman Gibson took over in 1890 after previously serving as their traveller-manager and secretary and managing director. Taken over by Castle Brick Co in 1913. Closed 1941. Clay reserves used by adjacent Catherall's works.

Panoramic view of industrial Buckley at the turn of the Twentieth Century. In the foreground is Gibson's Brookhill Brickworks. Alongside are the tramway exchange sidings with the Wrexham, Mold and Connah's Quay Railway. The railway proceeds past "Ronglas Wood" (site of ancient coal works) over Liverpool Road Bridge, past the Globe Works on the left and Ewloe Hall Colliery opposite on the right. It continues past Etna and Messrs Davison's Old Ewloe Works. Here the original Buckley Railway diverged to the right and terminated at Messrs Prince's Knowle Lane Works.

6.9.1864 Lease from Gwysaney Estate to George Meakin, Chester. George Powell, Buckley Drainage Pipe Works from P. Davies-Cooke through his agent, G. M. Dixon to John Palin, land agents. Also 7 acres of fire clay at site of Belmont.

The above amalgamated with a group formed by George Meakin and Robert Roberts of Chester, who leased from Davies-Cooke twelve and a half acres at Brookhill.

20.2.1865 This was incorporated and main shareholders were: George Meakin (£60), Robert Roberts (£60), Francis Paton (£87) and four others of £20. Ewloe Pottery was sub-let to George Powell.

1.1866 John Merriman Gibson became the Company's traveller

1867 New chimney at Belmont, but many efforts to sell the works. Finally, they could not sell the works.

6.1867 John Merriman Gibson became manager and secretary

1871 Trade increased. A connecting tramway was built

6.1890 John Merriman Gibson became managing director

1912 Big chimney at Belmont felled. Sheds began to be demolished

1913 Belmont abandoned due to exhaustion of clay. Levi Thomas was book-keeper - cashier for over 50 years until his death in 1929.

9.1939 Production concentrated on Castle Old Works and Catherall's Works. Brookhill finally closed 1961.

1968 Demolished
